Herbal Medicine

Incorporating Yoga and Herbal Medicine to bring you back into to balance.

What is Herbal Medicine?

Before the world of pharmaceuticals took over, herbal medicine was the main source of medicine we used. It was based on traditional uses of plants, passed down through the generations. Research is now starting to show something herbalists knew all along. That plants are effective in treating disease. However herbal medicine is not just a science, plants are a complex mix of compounds, but are far more than just active constituents. Herbal medicine is also an art, the way a herbalist sees the person, the plants and uses their intuitive nature to prescribe not only what is scientifically but also energetically the best treatment.

An initial consultation will normally last around an hour to 90 minutes. We will discuss any presenting issues, other body systems, past medical history and family history. We will discuss any physical, mental, emotional or energetic imbalances. This is a holistic approach, where the treatment plan is fitted for the person as a whole, not just a set of symptoms or a disease. Herbs might be used internally through powders, capsules, tinctures (alcoholic extract) and/or infusions (drank as teas). External preparations like creams, ointments and oils may also be used.  Alongside this, diet and lifestyle recommendations will be made to help restore health. This may involve a personalised yoga practice. Herbal medicine does not only treat the symptoms but also restores the underlying imbalances.

About me

I have studied a diploma in Herbal Medicine for four years, including 500 clinic hours, and I am a qualified Medical Herbalist. I worked in the drug development industry for thirteen years in safety testing and hold an MSc in Analytical Biosciences. I was always most interested in the fact that most of the drugs we analysed came from plant compounds. When I started practicing Yoga I realised the importance of holistic health, learning more about myself I came to realise that a herbal approach to medicine was more in line with my values. I think it is valuable that I can bring my knowledge of science, pharmaceuticals and understanding of the research, alongside what I have learnt from a traditional herbal medicine perspective. Also integrating my knowledge from Yoga, including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which I have an understanding of from my Yin Yoga training. Through my own personal journey, I have found the combination of a Yoga practice and herbs can work synergistically, using the combined effect to regain balance in the body and mind.
